This small lighthouse with uncanny similarities to Port Macquarie’s Tacking Point Lighthouse is well worth a visit.
The charming fishing village of Crowdy Head and its Lighthouse is a further 6 kilometres on from Harrington. Here the houses overlook a great surfing beach and a little marina which protects the fishing fleet. Up the hill sits the Crowdy Head Lighthouse with expansive 360 degree views. The lighthouse is the last of five which are similar in design and was built by James Barnet in 1878; the other four being Fingal Head, Clarence River Light, Tacking Point Lighthouse and Richmond River Light. If you ever visit Tacking Point Lighthouse at Port Macquarie you will be amazed at the uncanny similarities.
The Crowdy Head Lighthouse stands just 7.3 metres high, was built from local stone and automated in 1928. The Light was converted to mains electricity in 1972. In 2002 the 4th Order Fresnel lens was sold on eBay for $20,000 and is now on display at Sea Girt Light in New Jersey.
