Discovering stories of bushrangers, amazing survival feats, pioneers, iconic pubs, famous inventions and racing scandals in the most unexpected places.
“G’day mate, what’s been happening around town?” I ask the local barfly sitting beside me at the Brocklesby Hotel.
“Not much buddy, it’s always pretty quiet around here. Nothing exciting ever happens in these parts of the woods” replies the stranger.
I’m travelling around the small farming communities in the Greater Hume Shire (between Wagga Wagga and Albury) in southern NSW. A number of small rural villages exist in the surrounding region with the main activities being sheep, cattle and grain growing. Life in the ‘sticks’ can often appear to be uneventful. And that’s how most country folk like it.
However, I dig a little deeper and quickly learn that every now and then extraordinary things DO happen to small country towns just like Brocklesby. And what I discover is truly fascinating. Every town in the region has an interesting story, historic moment or significant event just waiting to be told.
