Canning adventure
My wife Heather and I have enjoyed travelling a fair bit of Australia in the last few years so when the suggestion was made over an extended dinner with friends that we three couples should plan a trip together it seemed like a great idea. As the evening wore on it was suggested we travel the Canning Stock Route.
We had of course heard of the Canning, but at the time we were blissfully unaware of its reputation as one of the most remote and challenging tracks in Australia. Depending on how many side trips are taken, the distance can be over 2000km from its southern gateway in Wiluna WA to its northern exit point on the Tanami Track east of Halls Creek. Along the way it crosses some 900 sand hills, miles of severe corrugations and the Great Sandy, the Little Sandy and the Gibson Deserts.
