At Pimpara Lake, travellers will find peaceful bush camping and a huge outback welcome.
In the Corner Country of NSW, Pimpara Lake is one of a handful of stations that welcomes visitors through the front gates. Properties like Pimpara provide an excellent opportunity for travellers to explore landscapes that are usually off-limits, and for outback newbies there’s the chance to experience a remote location in a safe environment. Best of all, Pimpara’s got some excellent bush camping that’s far, far away from the crowds.
Getting to Pimpara’s a good drive in itself as the property’s a reasonable distance off the beaten tourist track. From the Silver City Highway, roughly 140km north of Broken Hill, the Sanpah Road runs west toward the rundown of the Barrier Range. Twenty kilometres along this road an intersection marks what could be called the back road to Milparinka, and from there it’s another 40km north to Pimpara.
This route passes a number of other homesteads and through associated gates – bush rules state to leave each gate as you find them. While the road’s all unsealed it is well formed, though weather events and maintenance schedules can put a few corrugations and washouts around, especially near usually dry creek lines. Vehicles and off-road vans with a bit of ground clearance will have no problems negotiating the terrain.
The landscapes around here can be dusty yet fascinating, and a topographical map will put names to some of the subtle landforms. It’s an area to admire and to take your time through, and to start relaxing back to country time.
