Have you ever thought about an African Safari?
So you love being out on the road but you feel like something a little different? How about a bit of an African safari? No, not that canned rubbish you see on Getaway. A bit of the real thing where you fly in, grab a vehicle and gear, then go and wing it to find your own bit of adventure. South Africans seem to be the only folks with a camping and travel culture similar to our own and the destinations and service providers that let you put it all together, and it is just waiting there for you.
Too hard you say? Well really it is no more organisationally challenging than flying to Darwin, picking up your rental vehicle and enjoying a Kakadu or Kimberley experience – apart from tedious little things like longer flights, passports and border crossings. A little African excursion might take you out of your comfort zone on occasions but if you don’t do that every now and again, check your pulse to make sure you are still alive.
Just like travelling in Australia, I’d put people into three categories for something like this. There are those who will want to do it all themselves, others who want a do-it-yourself experience but with a little logistical help, then there are those who want everything done for them in a tour. What I am talking about will be of interest to the first two categories.
Category One people will research madly, book themselves a vehicle and be on their way in no time so they are really only after a vehicle rental company and there are plenty of those, many branches of the same organisations servicing Australia like Britz and Hertz.
Category Two are keen starters but they will want a bit of guidance to give them the confidence to rip into it, and wanting to know there are reputable service providers with support and back up.
The good news is that this category is very well catered for in the southern regions of Africa as a thriving sector of the tourism market, with some long-standing and reputable companies in this space.
