David and Debi Brant had sent some time searching the Queensland coast from Warwick to the Daintree looking for that perfect location and Caravan Park to call home. Once they entered Mount Morgan on the Burnett Highway between Dululu and Rockhampton they knew they had struck gold. This quiet country town with a proud mining history was founded in 1882 and became one of the largest mines in the world, producing over 225,000 tons of gold, silver and copper.
Entering Mount Morgan from the south you will discover their new venture and home at the Silver Wattle Caravan Park. As you enter the park you are guaranteed to receive a warm friendly welcome with a free gift of local produced eggs. Set on various different levels this park offers a very different feel from most other caravan parks.
Twelve months on and the proud new owners have settled into the local lifestyle of Mount Morgan and the challenges of running a caravan park. Like any new business there has been a lot to learn and many projects undertaken to improve this already successful park. Although it’s a smaller park with around 45 sites and 15 cabins/motel style rooms it manages to keep them on their toes.
They have a passion for gardens and the caravan park grounds are in the long term process of new plantings and remodelling to introduce more colour and create a tropical canopy feel at the park.
Proof of this landscaping work is already evident when you approach the entrance to the park and are welcomed by an antique tractor and plough and the check in at the front office where a new water feature has just been completed.
Dave also being a registered builder is making improvements to the buildings and increasing the roof area of the famous camp kitchen where they also provide a vegetable and herb garden available to all the guests. Other projects completed include an upgraded dump point area and a disabled room with ramp, handrail and shower improvements.
One of the highlights of this park is Happy Hour every afternoon at around 5pm between April – September. Around the open fire they provide delicious nibbles every day with fried rice, pizza, home-made sausage rolls, spring rolls and many more yummy treats on the menu. It’s a great opportunity to hear music, have a few laughs and for everyone to get to know each other over a few stories.
This caravan park abounds with birdlife amongst the tranquillity of the gardens and is often used as a base whilst visiting the many various locations the Central Coast and Capricorn region have to offer.
Mount Morgan itself has 2 museums, an old cemetery, 2 bowls clubs, old mine, beautiful dam with all facilities, golf course, gold fossicking, great lookouts and historic buildings. There are many different events throughout the year and good food of course!
The park has around 45 powered sites at $28 and unpowered sites at $22, self-contained cabins available from $120, motel units available from $90 and budget rooms available from $60, camp kitchen, dump point, large spotless amenities and laundry facilities, is pet friendly and they welcome all different clubs.
