Take me to the River..
Immersed in history and culture, the Murray River is our longest navigable river.
It also has some of the finest kayaking and canoeing experiences in the world.
I’m sorry your honour – I plead guilty. I’ve taken a national icon for granted and I apologise profusely.
I’ve lived in Albury for most of my life. I basically grew up on the Murray, spending my early years swimming, fishing, kayaking and camping by the river. Every day after school in summer, I would meet my mates at the same spot. We would jump off trees, make swings and carry on like ‘ratbags’. We were the aussie version of Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer and co.
Nowadays I walk my dog to a nearby reserve most days for a swim. But sometimes it feels like a bit of a chore. My relationship with the river was changing and we were growing apart.
Time constraints, work and family commitments meant that camping and fishing trips were becoming a thing of the past. I felt the need to spice things up a bit, try something different and explore somewhere new.
It was time for a date with the ‘old girl’, just me and the river.
